Comparing methylene blue preparations
The hormetic curve
Methylene blue follows what pharmacologists call a hormetic dose response: beneficial effects at low doses that flatten and can even reverse as doses climb. At small amounts, the compound supports the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Push far beyond that range and it can begin to interfere with the very processes it supports at lower doses.
This is unusual in the supplement world, where the marketing instinct is always toward bigger numbers. With this molecule, the science argues the opposite.
What the low range looks like
The doses discussed in the cognitive and longevity research context are typically in the range of a fraction of a milligram to a few milligrams per kilogram of body weight, and many practitioners in the field work with fixed daily amounts in the single-digit milligrams.
At these levels, most people notice no urine color change at all, which surprises anyone whose mental image of methylene blue comes from aquarium dosing. Vivid blue urine is a sign of a large dose, not a badge of effectiveness.
Consistency beats intensity
Mitochondrial support is a compounding project, not an acute one. The reports that dominate customer and practitioner accounts describe changes that build across two to four weeks of daily use: steadier energy through the afternoon, easier mornings, a quieter kind of focus.
Practically, that means a precise daily dose you will actually take every day beats a heroic dose taken sporadically. Delivery format matters here too: a precisely manufactured dose removes the measurement error that comes with dropper bottles and DIY dilutions.
Who should not experiment
Methylene blue inhibits an enzyme called monoamine oxidase at meaningful doses, which is why it must not be combined with SSRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic medications without physician supervision. The interaction is well documented and serious.
People with G6PD deficiency should avoid the compound entirely, and anyone pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition should involve their doctor first. None of this is fine print; with this molecule it is the main print.
